Ouch … cramps

Filed under: Uncategorized — workaholicrunner @ 4:34 pm

For the first time ever, I had cramps in a race.  During this morning’s inaugural Spirit of Columbus half marathon, I felt my left leg cramping up during mile 3.  At that point, I had a decent pace of about 10 minutes per mile.  But I did not want to risk further injury and the summer heat and humidity was bothering me too.  I decided to finish the race at a slower pace.  I forgot to bring my watch and there were few clocks around the course.  I think I finished in 2:25 with the first half at 1:12 and the second half at 1:13 for an 11:05 per mile pace.  This would be my slowest half marathon of the 12 I have participated in.  But my record of completing every race is still intact.  I’m not having a DNF in my record if I have to crawl to the finish.

What a painful experience this race was.  Ouch!

Now I have to redeem myself in the Air Force half marathon in Dayton three week from now.  This is my favorite half marathon because it is one of the few half marathons with pacers specifically for the half.  The US Air Force team are also the best organizers of any race I have participated in.  The only minor disadvantage of this race is that it is inside Wright Patterson Air Force base and civilian spectators are not allowed on the course except at the start and finish lines.

Too Many Shoes

Filed under: Uncategorized — workaholicrunner @ 4:23 am

I started running in April 2004.  I just checked my shoe racks.  Since April 2004, I have purchased 15 pairs of running shoes, 2 of which I have not even used yet.  Thus, in 52 months of running, I have used 13 pairs.  It would seem that on average, I purchase one every four months or less.  Here is the list:

1 Adidas, 1 Brooks, 1 Reebok, 2 Nike, 3 Asics, and 7 New Balance

This does not include my hiking shoes, tennis shoes, walking shoes, going to work shoes, and other miscellaneous shoes.

I just wish I could wear running shoes to work.  Unfortunately, I still have to wear leather shoes and slacks.  I can actually wear jeans to work but runnings shoes are still not allowed.  At least, I do not have to wear a suit and tie everyday like my previous job.  Five years ago, I would go to work everyday in a dark suit, white shirt and tie.  On Fridays, I would be a bit more casual and wear a blue shirt, suit, and tie.  Absolute torture.

Sarah who???

Who is this person that McCain just picked as his VP running mate?  Why not Huckabee?  Huckabee’s a marathon runner.  However, Huckabee is probably not as fast as W.  I read before that W use to run 6 minute miles but that may just be an over eager press office who exaggerates a bit.  Latest I heard was W quit running a few years ago because of knee problems.  He just does mountain biking.

Regardless of who McCain picks, I’m still voting for Hillary … in 2016!

My shoes are here!

That was very fast customer service from New Balance.  I ordered the shoes on Wednesday night and received them Friday afternoon.  Shipping was free.  How fast e-commerce has developed.  The only bummer is New Balance no charges your home state’s sales tax.  This more than likely reduces customers’ cheating on the use tax.

Las Vegas Half Marathon and Pacquiao vs. De La Hoya

Filed under: Uncategorized — workaholicrunner @ 1:51 am

I’m thinking about running the Las Vegas Half Marathon on December 7.  Then I find out today that there is a possible De La Hoya – Pacquaio boxing match on December 6, also in Vegas.  What a weekend coming up!

Am I losing weight?

Filed under: Uncategorized — workaholicrunner @ 3:38 am

It is definitely not the Korean food.  But I felt that my shirt was a little bit loose today.  I ran 5 miles in about 48 minutes today and that included almost 0.4 miles of cool down walking.  I didn’t realize I was going somewhat faster than my normal easy run.  It must be the new lighter me.

Korean food = power running

I just had to put in a good word for Korean food.  I had what they call “LA Kalbi” (short ribs on a sizzling platter) with white rice and nine different kimchi courses last Friday night.  What a great meal.  The next morning I woke up highly energized.  I ran 15.3 miles and was still feeling very strong at the end.  IMO, I probably could have run 1 or 2 miles before I got tired.

Note to self:  Stop the pasta foolishness before a marathon.  Eat Korean BBQ!

Good deals on running shoes

I just purchased a New Balance 858 10 4E (yes I have very wide feet) on the internet for $60 with free shipping.  I think the retail price in stores is typically $99.  The NB Expresswebsite had it on clearance for $75 plus I also had a 20% off coupon sent to me via email.

I also have a $10 coupon at Dick’s Sporting Goods.  I’m thinking of buying the new Nike Air Pegasus which retails in the $80 price range.

I currently have an unused Asics 2120.  Although I did not need a shoe last year, I bought it because it was on sale plus I had a coupon.  I ended up paying about $69 for it.  You can probably find it on the internet at a lower price these days.

The great thing about running shoes is that you can wait a year or more after the new model first appears.  Once it goes on clearance, you can purchase it for $20-$40 cheaper.  I never buy new releases because I don’t really see and feel any diffeences between the New Balance 766, 767, or 768.  I can’t justify paying $100 or more for a running shoe when I know that in a few months the price will definitely go down.  Retailers have to move unsold inventory.
